Carlos is from Merida, Yucatan. Merida is approximately 3 hours from Akumal. Carlos’ wife, Marlene, and his three children, Edwin, Sayde, and Iraide all live in Merida.

How long has he worked at HAC?
Carlos began working here 11 years ago. He worked for 2 years at that time. He left to return home to Merida for 9 years. He returned to work here 1 year ago.

What brought Carlos to Akumal 11 years ago?
There was an economic crisis in Merida years ago and there were no jobs. Carlos found an ad in the paper for employment in this area. Once he got here he met many people that worked here that were also from Merida.

Special memory-
Carlos remembers when he first worked here that Elsie, Pablo Bush’s wife and Laura Bush’s mother, would give gifts at Christmas time to all of the workers. If you worked on Christmas Day then you received the gift. He said it was an incentive to come to work. He said they always received pants and shirts.

Something people don’t know about Carlos-
When Carlos was younger he was a professional boxer for 4 years in Cozumel. He was in the category of mini-fly because he only weighed 48 kg. During his four years of boxing he had 14 wins, 1 tie, and 1 loss. He fought one championship fight while in the amateurs at Isla Mujeres. His mother did not like him fighting so he decided to return home.

What does he like most about working at HAC?
Carlos likes doing flambé dishes for guests at Lol-ha restaurant.

What does Carlos like to do during his days off?
He reads and goes home to spend time with his family and work in his garden.
