Continuing Water Quality Monitoring Program
CEA´s newest research facility is a Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory. The lab provides on-site testing of the ground water and the water in Yal Kú Lagoon.
The lab tests for nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids and fecal coliform. In order to closely monitor the lagoon, five sites are studied weekly.
Future plans include an expanded sampling to include sites further inland, along the coast, offshore in the bays and over the reefs, as funding becomes available.
The laboratory facilities are available to visiting scientists and qualified students who are pursuing research at Akumal.
