Through the efforts of CEA volunteer, Heather Froeming, the town of Akumal is recycling. Many of the homes, condos and all of the restauarants are on the recycling program.
At this time there is a market for aluminum cans and the Recycling Center sells these recycled products to earn money for the Environmental Education Program for the local children.
A site has been allocated for the Recycling Center at Nuevo Akumal and the program collects recyclable waste from the hotels, condominiums and residences.
The plan for this program is to reduce the contamination from solid waste sources while teaching the community how to recycle and separate garbage.
Alternative Treatment Systems for Waste Water
The standard septic systems, which historically have been used in the region, do not work in the coastal marine karst terrain of Akumal because there is no sediment for a leach field below ground.
Alternative systems, the composting toilet and the created wetland, have been built on CEA property. Each system has been operating for more than a year and both have proven very successful.
In response, the community of Akumal is adding created wetlands, an above ground leach field, to the existing systems. Akumal, the oldest resort on the Mexican Caribbean, is fast becoming the most ecologically-sound resort on the coast.
