There are many one day trips to ruins that can be taken from Akumal. Hera are some of the attractions:
Xel Ha
This is a fresh-salt water cove which is perfect for snorkeling and swimming. Located 10 kilometers south, the best time to visit is early in the morning.
The only Mayan city on the coastline is located 27kilometers south of Akumal. There is a handicraft market outside the archaeological area for those keen on shopping. This is known as the Tulum Shopping Mall.
Xcacel and Chemuyil
These are two very beautiful beaches located just south of Akumal. There is an entrance fee to help keep the beaches clean. Generally, along the coastline, if you see a sign that indicates beach, It's worthwhile to take a peek. If there is no sign, do not drive in as it could be private property. To the north, two other nice beaches are Paamul and Xpu Ha.
Xaak
This destination is a must. Plan to spend a minimum ofhalf a day. There is an underground river to float on, beach activities, an aviary, horse show, and horseback riding. This is a very well planned attraction.
Just past Xel-Ha, this place offers Jungle Adventure Tours. There are three to choose from: The Underwater Cavern Tours, The Snorkel and Jungle Adventure, and the Dry Cave Adventure. For more information, please see the Activity Board at the reception.
Coba
This archaeological site is partially hidden in the jungle. Just 45 minutes drive, the turn-off heads inland after the gas station in Tulum. The road is very well marked.
There are many other places of interest. Please see our Bulletin Board at the Reception, for other tours, activities and destinations.
